What is the Skills Assessment?
The skills assessment is designed to help HTLL establish the Minor A and Majors teams for the season. Assessments also keep each kid progressing in their baseball development, rather than being held back unnecessarily.
Who must participate?
All players registered for Minor A and Majors must participate in the skills assessment, plus 9 yr olds registered for Minor B.
- League Age 7-8 Minor A
- League Age 9 Minor A & Minor B
- League Age 10 Minor A & Majors
- League Age 11 Minor A & Majors
- League Age 12 Majors
Skills Assessment Activities
Skills assessments will be fun! Players will participate in a series of baseball activities:
- Catching outfield fly balls (2 attempts)
- Fielding ground balls (2 attempts)
- Batting (4 swings off a pitching machine)
- Base running (sprint from home to 2nd base)
- Pitching (2 pitches thrown)
It's a very positive and supportive environment, not a "test". Don't feel you need to overly "prepare" your player.
What happens next? Player selection and draft information
After the skills assessments are complete, the league will hold a draft with the managers of Majors and Minor A to build the teams.
All new 12 yr old players and returning Majors players will be drafted onto a Majors team.
For all other players, the division signup is the starting point for where they will be placed. For example, it is possible that a high-performing Minor A signup could be drafted by a Majors manager. It's also possible that a new 10-11 yr old Majors candidate is not chosen for Majors and is placed in Minor A for further development.
Returning Minor A players will be placed on a Minor A team at minimum. New Minor A candidates (7-8-9 yr olds) will be returned to Minor B if not drafted by a Minor A manager. 9 yr old Minor B signups could be placed onto a Minor A team if drafted.
